A woman listens to a concert or a recording, and the first songs pass her by: lovely, calm, nothing special. And then one particular piece begins, and suddenly there are tears she was not expecting from herself. The explanation here is fairly technical, and it is in the way the songs themselves are built.
A song as a key
Every song is like a key to a particular state in a woman. It helps to open something in her emotional body, in her body, maybe in her pain, some little key.
For one woman that key fits straight away, she is all softness and she has opened. For others it is: yes, not bad, you sing nicely, go on. But the next song, on the contrary, turns out to be the right key for them, and suddenly those women seem to lose control. They stop analysing, thinking and assessing, they allow themselves to let go into living it fully and into the beauty of what they feel.
Something follows from that which removes a lot of unnecessary questions to yourself. If some song does not land, that is normal: this key simply is not for your lock. Another one will land.
What you see from the stage
I see the hall as six thousand souls. I see it as six thousand stars. And at the same time I see the human aspects, here and there the stress, and the little wants, and the pain, and the disappointment, and the reaching for love. All of it, all of it, all of it.
It is like, you know, a kind of noise, as if everyone in the hall is talking loudly. You walk out, and people are talking.
But I give no energy to that. To the fact that someone is closed, that someone is a little braced like this. Because that is not their real nature. Because I know their real nature.
The noise you give no energy to
This move works far beyond the stage, and it is perhaps the most useful thing to take from it.
A woman who looks at someone close to her through his irritation today sees an irritated person. A woman who remembers who he really is talks to the real him, and the conversation turns out completely different.
In a hall of thousands and at the kitchen table it is built the same way. Attention goes where you direct it, and whatever you give energy to becomes bigger.
The work of a bridge
I know that my work this evening is to be that bridge for them. So that from that braced state or some emotional state they come into the state of yes, that is me, yes, I am.
And maybe along that path, while they are walking across my bridge, somewhere they will dance, somewhere they will cry, somewhere there will be goosebumps, somewhere there will be laughter, somewhere there will be ecstasy. Everything happens in that hall, everything.
But I am not doing this for myself. My work is to be that bridge, to transmit this abundant powerful energy into the hall.
Why there have to be many songs
The structure of a whole concert or album follows from the way the key works.
One song cannot fit everyone at once, and six thousand women in a hall are six thousand different locks. So the pieces go one after another, in a particular order, and each has its own task: one opens the throat, another releases the chest, a third lets the body move, a fourth settles everything down.
A woman listening straight through usually finds her two or three. Those are the ones she then gives back to herself, in headphones, when it gets tight inside.
Why it works at home as well
The main thing in this explanation is that it takes away music's role as background.
A song built as a key to a state works in headphones in the kitchen too. There is exactly one condition: listen to it while doing only that, without a feed running alongside and without a list of tasks in your head. Then the body gets a chance to respond, and it responds quickly.
For a woman who has had something standing inside her uncried for a long time, one right song often gives more than a month of conversations about how she ought to let go. Sound goes around explanations and works where they are powerless.
Music knows how to be a key, and the keys are different, for different inner doors. So it is worth choosing by response: listen to the piece after which something in the body shifted.
