The lower belly is the place a woman most often counts as her flaw. She pulls it in for photographs, hides it under loose clothing, apologises for it to herself in front of the mirror. And this is the part of the body where her central organ sits.
Abs and female anatomy
A woman's belly is not a six-pack at all. A six-pack is not a reflection of beauty. In a woman the womb sits low in the belly, which is why a soft roundness, or roundness, is normal.
Defined abdominal muscles came into the female agenda from men's athletics, and there they belong. A woman's body has a different task down there: that is where the organ sits through which every human being arrived on this planet, and nature arranged space around it.
A woman who holds that area pulled in for years lives with a chronically clenched centre. Breathing in that position stays high, the pelvis moves less, and the energy that should rise from below runs into the clamp.
Tension that has a reason
Working with women I ask them to look for the places in the body where there is that kind of tension, that pressure, as if we are squeezing ourselves, limiting ourselves somewhere. They are found quickly, and the reason is usually the same one.
It can be tension because you are constantly trying to present yourself somehow, you are constantly trying to show yourself somehow.
From there the body takes one of two roads. In the first case everything tightens: the lips just so, the cheeks just so, and she tries to carry herself into the world instead of allowing herself simply to appear. In the second case it is the opposite, everything has closed, and you transmit nothing at all, you try not to transmit into this world, you are afraid even to show yourself, because you do not feel safe in it.
Both versions cost the body the same, and both begin in the head and live in the muscles.
The way a woman sits
There is something that is usually not treated as important: the way a woman sits.
Crossed legs, knees pressed together, a compact pose in which the body takes up as little room as possible. I do not sit with my legs crossed, closing myself off. I practise seated: the feet are on the floor, the knees are apart, the pelvis is higher than the knees, the shoulders are open. And you see immediately what kind of energy appears.
Clearly you do not have to travel on the metro like that, and not always. But in general an open seat is very natural for a woman. In it the body breathes deeper, the pelvis moves more freely, the spine lines itself up.
At home, in your own space, it is worth noticing the shape you have got used to holding yourself in and how much strength that composure takes.
What changes when the clamp lets go
In practice I work a great deal with alternation: a gentle contraction of the muscles of the lower belly and the female centre on the inhale, and full release on the exhale. Contract, draw up, hold, and then maximum release. This repeats several times in a row, slowly, with attention to the sensations.
The point of this alternation is that a muscle held in one position for years stops being felt at all. It simply becomes background, and the woman sincerely believes that nothing is happening there. Contracting and releasing give that area its sensitivity back, and the body remembers what it used to be able to do.
Breathing comes back first. It goes deeper, into the belly, and then a movement appears that is like a wave: the push travels from the feet through the knees and hips and reaches the crown of the head.
At the start you may feel a slight tension, and that is normal. It passes by itself once the body is convinced that nothing is being demanded of it.
Meeting instead of judging
Work with the body begins with meeting it. We are not trying to do anything there, we are simply getting acquainted. The gaze goes inward, into the lower belly, and you ask yourself: what do I feel there, what sensations rise, what thoughts. Without conclusions and without judgements.
Hello, my body. Hello. And then, calmly, the lower belly, the pelvis, the hips, the knees.
The body answers that kind of address faster than it answers any demand. It has heard all its life what is wrong with it. What is unfamiliar is something else: being greeted.
The shape of a woman's body is arranged around what that body can do. The roundness low in the belly belongs to how this body is built, and accepting that fact gives the body its mobility back far faster than another round of abdominal exercises.
