The Sound Your Body Already Knows

What humming really does to the vagus nerve — and why the oldest self-soothing sound in the world is having a scientific moment.

What the Research Actually Shows

Start with what the vagus nerve actually is, because the phrase gets thrown around loosely. It is the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system, wandering from the brainstem down through the throat, heart, lungs and gut. It is the main cable of the parasympathetic branch — the “rest, digest and recover” side of you — and the more active it is, the more easily your body drops out of alert. Researchers estimate its activity through heart-rate variability (HRV): the tiny, healthy beat-to-beat changes in your pulse. Higher variability generally means a well-toned vagus and a nervous system that can calm itself. Lower variability travels with chronic stress, anxiety and poor sleep. So the practical question is simple: what can a woman actually do to raise vagal tone on demand?

One answer is almost embarrassingly ordinary — breathe out slowly, for longer than you breathe in. A major review of contemplative practices concluded that the shared active ingredient across meditation, yoga breathing and chanting is respiratory: a low breathing rate and, above all, long exhalations, which stimulate the vagus nerve and tilt the whole system toward calm (Gerritsen & Band, 2018). This is the quiet key to why humming works at all. You cannot hum on the in-breath. A hum is a long, controlled exhale by design — which means every hum is, mechanically, a dose of the exact thing the vagus responds to.

But breath is only half of it, and this is where humming becomes more interesting than plain slow breathing. Humming adds vibration. In a pilot fMRI study, researchers scanned people's brains while they chanted a sustained, resonant “Om” and compared it with a matched non-vibratory sound. The chanting produced significant deactivation in the limbic regions — the amygdala, the brain's alarm centre, among them — and the authors proposed the effect travels through the vagus nerve's sensory branch inside the ear, which the vibration stimulates (Kalyani et al., 2011). In plain terms: a resonant hum appears to reach the fear centre of the brain and turn its volume down, using a nerve pathway you can't consciously access any other way.

And it shows up in the heartbeat. In a Holter-monitor study, researchers recorded heart-rate variability while participants practised simple humming and compared it with physical activity, emotional stress and sleep. Humming shifted the HRV markers toward the parasympathetic, lower-stress pattern — the researchers framed it, plainly, as a “stress buster” (Trivedi et al., 2023). A separate and much older finding rounds out the picture at the level of body chemistry: humming raises the nitric oxide in your nasal passages about fifteen times higher than quiet exhaling does (Weitzberg & Lundberg, 2002). Nitric oxide helps open blood vessels and airways; the original study was about sinus health, not stress, so it's worth being precise — but it confirms that something real and measurable changes in the body the moment you begin to hum.

What Perukua Says About the Humming Body

Perukua — the Australian vocalist and women's facilitator whose sound and practices have reached women in more than 63 countries — arrived at the same doorway decades before the fMRI machines did, from the other side. “It is no accident,” she teaches, “that in every ancient culture, women — and men too — sang. Sound is a simple, fast and powerful instrument for harmonising your inner state.” Her motto is blunter than any study: “To sing is already good. But to sound — to hum — is even better.”

She is precise about where the tension she's undoing actually lives. “Many women feel as though the top button of a too-small shirt is done up,” she says. “The throat a little tight, a little pressed, slightly scratchy. That is one of the ways stress shows itself in the body.” In her account this is not only physical. “From childhood many of us were taught to be ‘good girls’ — to stay quiet, to listen, to express ourselves less. But to lock your whole emotional world inside is ruinous for a woman.” Humming, for her, is how a woman who was trained into silence begins, gently, to make sound again — without having to sing, perform, or be heard by anyone.

Her instruction for why it calms is strikingly close to the neuroscience, described from the inside. “Place your hand below your navel and hum a bright ‘Huuu,’” she says. “Focus all your attention on your palm. You will feel your belly vibrating beneath it. This rooting in the body is the fastest way out of the whirlpool of thoughts — the state we fall into in fear and stress” (interview, Marie Claire). The scientists call it vagal stimulation and limbic deactivation. Perukua calls it coming out of your head and back into your body. They are describing one event from two directions.

She also makes a claim about body chemistry, and here it's worth drawing the line carefully. Perukua reports that voice and sound sharply raise the body's production of nitric oxide — she puts the figure at fifteen to twenty times. That is her own account, offered as a facilitator rather than a scientist; what the peer-reviewed research confirms is narrower and specific — a roughly fifteenfold rise in nasal nitric oxide during humming (Weitzberg & Lundberg, 2002). The honest summary is that her instinct pointed at something the instruments later measured, without needing to overstate it. You do not have to believe every number to feel the shift the first time you try it. Why a Hum Reaches Where Willpower Can't

Put the science and Perukua's account together and the mechanism becomes clear — and clarifying, because it explains why “just calm down” never works. Anxiety is not, at root, a thought problem you can think your way out of. It is a body in a state of alert, and the switch for that state is autonomic — below conscious control. You cannot decide to lower your heart rate the way you decide to lift your arm. What you can do is use the few voluntary levers that connect to the involuntary system. Breath is the main one. Vibration through the vagus is another. A hum happens to pull both at once.

Follow it through the body. The moment you begin to hum, you are forced into a long, slow exhale — the single respiratory pattern most reliably linked to rising vagal tone (Gerritsen & Band, 2018). At the same time, the sound sets up a physical vibration in the chest, throat and skull, and that resonance appears to reach the vagus nerve's branch in the ear and quiet the brain's alarm centres (Kalyani et al., 2011). Meanwhile your attention, which in anxiety is spinning through worst cases, has something concrete and physical to land on: the buzz under your hand. That is why humming can interrupt a spiral that no reassuring sentence can touch. It doesn't argue with the fear. It changes the state the fear is running on.

This also explains why it belongs to women who feel most powerless to relax. A Two-Minute Humming Practice

Here is the practice, stripped to what matters. It takes two minutes, needs no skill, and works best done quietly on your own so you are not performing for anyone. You are not trying to sound good. You are using vibration and a long exhale to speak to a nerve.

Sit with your spine easy and your shoulders down. Place your left hand low on your belly, below the navel, and your right hand over it. Breathe in slowly through your nose until you feel your belly press gently into your hands. Then, on a long, unhurried exhale, hum a bright “Huuu” — not a dull, closed sound but a clear one you can feel buzzing under your palms. Let the hum last as long as the out-breath naturally does, then pause and breathe in again. Keep all of your attention on the vibration under your hands, not on the sound itself. Do this for about two minutes. Then, if you like, move your right hand to the centre of your chest and hum a warmer “Haaa,” feeling the vibration open through the ribs and around the heart. Humming is gentle and safe for almost everyone; the worst that usually happens is a little lightheadedness if you force the breath, which stops the moment you soften it. How does humming stimulate the vagus nerve?

Is humming better than deep breathing for anxiety?

It's not better — it's deep breathing with an extra ingredient.
